Description:
Decanoic acid is a fatty acid with the chemical formula CH3(CH2)7COOH. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water, but insoluble in ether and chloroform. Decanoic acid has two different shapes, known as conformers, which can interconvert by rotation around the central carbon-carbon bond. The more stable conformer has an unbroken octagonal ring of three double bonds. In this form, it consists of a central carbon atom surrounded by eight hydrogen atoms and six carbon atoms. Decanoic acid has many applications, including use as a food additive to prevent spoilage and as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals such as dibasic esters and octanoate salts. This chemical also plays an important role in animal metabolism, where it can be converted into ketone bodies or used for energy production.
